CHC PRESENTS “PARENTING A CHILD WITH HEARING LOSS,” A WORKSHOP FACILITATED BY DAVID LUTERMAN AND LOIS KAM HEYMANN OCTOBER 30TH IN NEW YORK CITY
The Center for Hearing and Communication (CHC) will present a workshop October 30, 2011 for parents who are dealing with the complex emotional issues of raising a child with hearing loss. “Parenting a Child with Hearing Loss” is an intimate, full-day workshop consisting of group discussions, informal lectures, break-out support sessions and opportunities for parents to get to know one another. Facilitated by educator and advocate Dr. David Luterman and CHC speech therapist Lois Kam Heymann, the program is open to parents (and other caregivers) of children of any age with a hearing loss.

Dr. Luterman is Professor Emeritus at Emerson College in Boston and Director of the Thayer Lindsey Family Centered Nursery for Hearing Impaired Children. He has dedicated his career to developing a greater understanding of the psychological effects associated with hearing loss and the caregiver role. Dr. Luterman teaches professionals to understand the emotional responses of parents as they come to grips with the hearing loss of their child. He has lectured and written extensively on counseling and hearing loss throughout the United States, Canada, and abroad and has authored a number of books on the subject matter of hearing loss in children.
Lois Kam Heymann, M.A., CCC-SLP
Lois Kam Heymann, Director of CHC’s Shelley and Steven Einhorn Communication Center, is an acclaimed speech-language pathologist with over 30 years of experience working with people of all ages who are deaf and hard of hearing as well as children with listening, learning, and auditory challenges. Author of The Sound of Hope, Heymann is a sought after speaker, having presented hundreds of in-service workshops, seminars, and conferences. She leads CHC’s team of uniquely skilled speech-language pathologists in the use of innovative therapeutic techniques that empower children and adults to achieve their full communication potential.

The workshop will take place October 30, 2011 from 8:30am-4:15pm at 42 Broadway (next door to the Center for Hearing and Communication), 20th Floor, New York, NY 10004.
