Mayor Proclaims May 25th "Center for Hearing and Communication Day"
The Center for Hearing and Communication (new name for the League for the Hard of Hearing) is celebrating 100 years of leadership and innovation in hearing healthcare. In recognition of this milestone, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg has declared May 25th, 2010 in the City of New York as Center for Hearing and Communication Day. “We’re proud to join the Center for Hearing and Communication in celebrating its 100th Anniversary,” notes the Mayor, “and together we look forward to even greater improvements to the quality of life of everyone living with hearing loss…I offer my best wishes for continued success in the next 100 years.”
Founded in 1910, this not-for-profit organization is renowned for its clinical expertise and innovative therapies for people of all ages with hearing loss. It is also regarded as a global leader in promoting healthy hearing practices and educating the public about noise and the impact noise has on hearing. The Center for Hearing and Communication (CHC) accomplishes its mission by providing hearing rehabilitation and human services for people who are hard of hearing or deaf and their families – regardless of age, ability to pay, or mode of communication – and by empowering clients to achieve their potential.
Marking the centennial, CHC holds its 100th Annual Meeting tomorrow, a historic event open to the public. The Meeting begins at 3:30pm and takes place at 52 Broadway on the 2nd floor. Along with a roster of special guests, the program includes a presentation of scholarships and awards. The Edward Nitchie Award in Human Communications, named after the founder of CHC, will be bestowed upon Caitlin Parton and her family, one of the first infants to receive a cochlear implant. In addition to the public meeting, CHC is offering New Yorkers 100 Days of Free Hearing Screenings. Through December 31st, New Yorkers will have 100 opportunities to get free hearing screenings conducted by a licensed audiologist. The screenings will take place at CHC’s office at 50 Broadway and aboard its Mobile Hearing Test Unit at various locations throughout New York City. To schedule a screening or learn more, visit www.CHChearing.org/100.
Further commemorating Center for Hearing and Communication Day, the public can receive a free hearing screening TODAY from 3pm – 5:30pm outside CHC’s office at 50 Broadway from a Mobile Hearing Test Unit.
